INSPIRED BY THE FIRST CIRCUMNAVIGATION THE JOURNEY OF MAGELLAN

The aquarium route is inspired by the expedition begun by Ferdinand Magellan in 1519, which departed from Seville and ultimately became the first circumnavigation of the world under Juan Sebastián Elcano.

During the visit, the exhibits move through aquatic environments linked to the Guadalquivir, Atlantic, Amazon, Pacific and Indo-Pacific, connecting Seville’s maritime history with ecosystems from different parts of the planet.

THE MAIN HIGHLIGHT THE OCEANARIUM & SHARKS

The centrepiece of the visit is the great Oceanarium. Its water column reaches almost 9 metres in depth and contains approximately 2 million litres of water, making it the deepest shark tank in the Iberian Peninsula.

A tunnel allows visitors to watch sharks, rays, large fish and sea turtles moving above and around them, creating one of the most immersive parts of the aquarium.

One of the aquarium’s signature animals: bull sharks share the Oceanarium with turtles and other large marine species. The size and depth of this tank are among the features that distinguish Seville Aquarium from many other aquariums in Spain.

MORE THAN AN EXHIBITION CONSERVATION & EDUCATION

Seville Aquarium also works in environmental education, research and conservation. Its educational activities focus on helping visitors understand marine ecosystems and the threats faced by many species.

The aquarium has participated in recovery and conservation programmes for marine animals, including sea turtles, and uses exhibitions and activities to encourage more responsible behaviour towards oceans and rivers.

A DIFFERENT SIDE OF SEVILLE VISITING WITH CHILDREN

The aquarium is particularly well suited to families because the route is indoors, easy to follow and varied enough to hold the attention of younger visitors. It is also a useful option during the hottest hours of the day or when the weather makes outdoor sightseeing less appealing.
