BASILICA OF JESÚS DEL GRAN PODER
Opening Hours
The origins of the Brotherhood of Jesús del Gran Poder are traditionally placed around 1431, making it one of the historic religious corporations of Seville.
Over the centuries the brotherhood occupied several religious houses and churches before establishing itself permanently in the San Lorenzo district. Its history would be transformed forever during the early 17th century by the creation of the image that today gives the brotherhood its universal fame.
1620
Juan de Mesa completed the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder together with the image of Saint John the Evangelist.
1703
The brotherhood established itself in the Parish Church of San Lorenzo, beginning its long association with the neighborhood.
In 1620, the sculptor Juan de Mesa y Velasco completed the extraordinary image of Jesús del Gran Poder. The sculpture represents Christ carrying the cross on the road to Calvary and is considered one of the great masterpieces of Spanish Baroque sculpture.
The image made its first documented penitential procession in 1621. Over the following centuries its expressive face, powerful movement and extraordinary realism helped create one of the strongest devotional traditions in Seville.
By the 20th century the chapel used by the Brotherhood in the neighboring Church of San Lorenzo was no longer large enough to receive the growing number of devotees who came to venerate the image.
Construction of the present temple began in 1960. The architectural project was created by Alberto Balbontín de Orta and Antonio Delgado Roig, who designed a centralized building intended to focus the visitor's attention directly on Jesús del Gran Poder.
1965
The new temple was completed and the images entered their new home in Plaza de San Lorenzo.
1992
Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the dignity of Minor Basilica.
The interior has a circular plan beneath a large dome. Unlike the historic Baroque churches that dominate much of central Seville, the Gran Poder is a 20th-century temple built with contemporary materials but inspired by traditional architectural forms.
The most famous moment of the year arrives during La Madrugá, the night between Holy Thursday and Good Friday, when the Brotherhood makes its annual penitential procession to Seville Cathedral.
Jesús del Gran Poder moves through the streets of the historic centre in one of the most recognizable scenes of Semana Santa in Seville. The procession is characterized by an atmosphere of solemnity and silence that contrasts with many other moments of Holy Week.
Why Visit the Gran Poder?
The Basilica itself is relatively modern, but the history and devotion it contains reach back centuries. At its centre is one of the defining works of Juan de Mesa and one of the most important images in the religious culture of Seville.
Located in the beautiful San Lorenzo district, the Gran Poder offers visitors a very different experience from the city's major tourist monuments: a living place of worship where art, history and everyday devotion remain inseparable.
